Demon Traps
Demon traps and containers of various scales made of glazed and underglaze stoneware, characterized by their bird and beak-like shapes. The ceramic traps recall the origin story of Lilit, who like Adam, was created from clay, and the ceramic incantation bowls used by healers in the 2nd-7th century. Lilit’s relationship to birds and owls is demonstrated in The Burney Relief from Mesopotamia and in the subspecies of the little owl found in Cyprus, Turkey, Iraq, and Egypt (Athene noctua lilith, known as the Owl of Minerva).
